The International Conference on “Aghamusa Akhundov
and Azerbaijani Philology” Began Its Work
With the organizational support of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (NASA) and Institute of Linguistics named after Nasimi on the 24th of April, 2017 the International Conference on “Aghamusa Akhundov and Azerbaijani Philology” dedicated to Honored Scientific Worker, State-Prize Laureate of the Republic of Azerbaijan , a Full Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Professor Aghamusa Akhundov began its work.
First of all, the participants of the conference visited A.Akhundov’s grave in the Second Honorary Avenue. Then they got acquainted with the exhibition of books referring the scientific activity of A.Akhundov which is situated in the main building of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
The President of NASA Academician Akif Alizade spoke about the life and activity of the distinguished scholar. He mentioned that Acad. Akhundov was one of the classics of Linguistics; he dealt with science, as well as, with pedagogical activity from his youth. Acad. Alizade also noted that Acad. Akhundov was not only a distinguished scientist, but also a highly-appreciated intelligent.
In his report entitled “Word About Academician Aghamusa Akhundov” the Vice-President of the NASA Academician Isa Habibbeyli mentioned that the school of Linguistics was founded in our country due to the researches done by Acad. Akhundov. He was the first scholar in the history of our science to defend his candidate dissertation in Philology at the age of 32 and received the academic title of Doctor of Philological Sciences. Acad. Habibbeyli said:”This was one of the rare cases not only in Azerbaijani science, but also in the science of the former Soviet Union. In fact, he could defend his dissertation before the required time limit.
Acad. Habibbeyli mentioned that “Acad. Akhundov proved that in the tense basis of our language stood the ancient participle and gerund. He was also the first researcher of Mathematical Linguistics and the language Aesthetics in Azerbaijan.
Moreover, the Vice-President highlighted that A.Akhundov’s activity in the field of Literature Studies is a new page in the traditional Linguistic-Literature Studies in our science. His are highly-appreciated works differ from the others for their high theoretical levels directed to the solution of serious theoretical issues.
Isa Habibbeyli mentioned Aghamusa Akhundov to be the only scholar, leading independent researches on verse as a phonetic matter and rhythm of our language. “Improvement processes referring interchanges from close syllable to the open one, progress from the close syllable to the open syllable in Azerbaijani poetry can be called the Theory of Aghamusa Akhundov. At the same time, the perfect comprehension of the matter of the language attraction both in syntactic constructions and as the opportunities of literary language was also brought to our language by this eminent scholar.’
Acad. Habibbeyli noted that “the scientific and theoretical heritage of Aghamusa Akhundov is the riches and worthy pattern reflecting all the realities of the humanitarian science comprehension in our country and abroad.
The report “The Distinguished linguist and scholar Academician Aghamusa akhundov “ was made by the Director of the Institute of Linguistics – a Corresponding Member of the NASA Mohsun Naghisoylu. He mentioned Acad. Akhundov’s great role in the development of our Linguistics. Acad. Naghisoylu highlighted that the scholar had gained a great reputation since his University years: “Aghamusa Akhundov was highly-respected by his teachers for his deep knowledge and intelligence at the Philological faculty of Azerbaijan State University. In 1955 A. Akhundov graduated from University with a Nizami scholarship and then successfully defended his dissertation theme ”The Category of Verb Tense” even six months earlier than the required time limit. In 1964 he defended his doctoral thesis “The Azerbaijani System of Phonemes” when he was 32and received the academic title of Doctor of sciences in Philology. So, he was considered to be one of the youngest Doctors of sciences in the USSR.”
Acad. Akhundov was assigned as the Director of the Institute of Linguistics and continued working in the same position for 22 years. In 2001 he was elected a Corresponding Member of NASA and academic secretary of NASA’s Department of Humanitarian and Social Sciences. Six years later he was elected a Full Member of NASA. At the same time, he was again elected academic secretary of his Department for the second turn. The distinguished scholar was the author of 36 books and nearly 500 articles. M.Naghisoylu also mentioned that Acad. Akhundov was awarded with the State-Prize for his monograph “Phonetics of Azerbaijani”. It was also noted that Acad. Akhundov had regularly investigated historical and modern phonetic issues before that book and got his two big monographs:”The Azerbaijani system of Phonemes” and “Historical Phonetics of Azerbaijani”.
The speaker also mentioned that A.Akhundov’s achievements in the field of Azerbaijani Linguistics were highly-appreciated and rewarded with many Honorary Titles and Awardsby the State and some other authoritative organizations.
M.Naghisoylu also said that such kind of great man, who had done so much for the development of our language, would always be remembered by everybody.
Then the Chairman of Azerbaijan Writers’ Union – Anar Rzayev, Rector of Baku State University – Acad. Abel Maherramov, Director of the Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan – Prof. Erden Kajibekov, the head of the Department of history and Ethnography of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the NASA – Acad. Teymur Bunyadov, Dean of the faculty of religion of Baku state University – Acad. Vasim Mammadaliyev, Professor of the Ayn-Shams University of Egypt – Mahammad Haridy, the head of the Turkish Language and Literature Department of the Faculty of Literature of Hacettepe University in Turkey – Shukru Haluk Akalyn gave their speeches on the life and activity of Acad.Akhundov. many foreign scholars also joined the event and shared their opinions with all the participants.
On the first day of the conference the following sections continued their work in the section meetings: Theory of Linguistics, Phonetics, Language and stylistics, the Issues of Literature and Literary Language, History of Language and Grammar.
